Founded in 1907, the NUJ (National Union of Journalists) is among the biggest and best-established journalists’ unions in the world, with more than 35,000 members. While the majority of them are based in Great Britain and Ireland, the NUJ also has an active branch here in Paris.
Currently, the branch has some 130 members across the French capital and wider France, working as staff and freelance journalists, reporters, correspondents, editors, photographers, broadcasters and copywriters (see the full list of qualifying roles defined as journalistic here).
The NUJ as a whole provides solidarity, support and professional information to members, who pay an annual subscription fee. The Paris branch performs that role for members based in France, as well as campaigning on key issues facing the media here, such as transparency, access to information and freedom of speech. We also aim to support our colleagues in other journalist trade unions.
For members in need of assistance, branch officers are often the first point of call, providing help, information and support with workplace or professional issues. If we aren’t able to assist ourselves, then we can also call on those at head office in London, where a highly experienced team are ready and waiting to help.
As well as getting together for a monthly meeting in central Paris, which does double duty as a social occasion,, our branch also has an email newsletter, The Grapevine, that reaches members across Europe, disseminating up-to-the-minute information and work opportunities.
